Free Markdown Editor with Live Preview

Free live Markdown editor with side-by-side preview. Write on the left, see it rendered on the right. No sign-up, nothing uploaded.

A free, private Markdown editor that runs in your browser. You write Markdown on the left and the right pane shows exactly how it will look once rendered. It is meant for people who want a quick scratchpad for notes, blog drafts, or README files, and for anyone preparing a clean text document to paste into ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini. You do not need an account, and nothing you type leaves your computer.

Typical use: a product manager drafting a three-page spec in Notion wants to hand it to engineering as a clean Markdown file in the repo. Paste the Notion export here, fix the handful of headings and bullet markers that did not survive the export, hit Download .md, commit. Fifteen minutes instead of an hour of reformatting. Load the example to see what good Markdown looks like, or start from scratch. If you need to convert a real file (a PDF, Word document, spreadsheet, or EPUB) into Markdown, our PDF to Markdown converter and the other format converters do the heavy lifting. For background reading, the why Markdown is the right format for AI article explains why most teams have moved away from DOCX for AI work.

Frequently asked questions

Does the editor upload what I type?+

No. The editor runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type is sent to our servers or any third party. You can safely use it for notes, drafts, and sensitive material.

Which Markdown flavor does the preview support?+

The preview covers standard CommonMark: headings, lists, links, images, code blocks, blockquotes, emphasis, and horizontal rules. For GitHub-flavored extras like tables and strikethrough, use the Markdown to HTML tool which has a GFM toggle.

Can I save my work?+

Use the Download .md button to save the file to your computer. The editor does not store drafts in the browser; close the tab and the content is gone.

Why would I write Markdown instead of using Word?+

Markdown is plain text, which means it stays readable forever, works with any text editor, and is the preferred format for ChatGPT, Claude, and most AI tools. It is also much lighter than DOCX and easier to diff and version-control.

Is there a word count?+

Yes. The bottom of the editor shows live word, character, and line counts based on what is currently in the editor.

Can I paste formatted text from Google Docs or Word?+

The editor only accepts plain text. If you paste from Word or Google Docs the formatting is stripped. To convert a real DOCX or Google Doc export, use the Word converter linked below.
